Overcoming the Silent Treatment

Right now, Twitter, Tumblr, and Yahoo are making or will be making auto-play videos a part of their lineup. Great, except — most of these videos default to mute. Hence, many if not most users are seeing but not hearing.

Marketers are tackling the silence problem in a variety of ways. One solution is simply grabbing attention from the get-go. Presumably, once viewers take a glance, they’ll stick around and flick on the audio.

Addressing the sounds of silence, a recent Capital One video ad displays a volume icon next to its celebrity host. The reminder encourages viewers to switch on the audio – at least, that’s the intent.

Going a step further, Ben and Jerry’s eliminated audio altogether. Their recent Facebook post features a silent video focused on a melting ice cube. The cube corresponds to the brand’s fresh new flavor.
